Notes & Recommendations for the IH

interesting article about UX

http://uxmag.com/design/five-ux-research-pitfalls

specifically:

Ask why. Asking users for their preference is not nearly as informative as asking users why they have a preference.

Verify your mental models. Make sure that the way you think about the product is the same as your user.

The article is a quick scan.

Updated scoring sheet

Maybe there was a way to edit my existing document, but  I didn't see it so I'm uploading the new version.

notes from wimba meeting 8/4/2010

Thanks for participating today! Great work!

We reviewed how to start and stop the archive and how to get someone to share their screen, talked about the survey and scheduling testers.

decisions made:

UX update!

The survey is up and ready for edits

http://www.askusnow.info/staff/groups/UX/survey

Please check it out and let me know any changes or if it’s good to go You all should have editing access to that so feel free to do so. Webforms are less straight forward to edit though, so please feel free to send me your ideas and edits and I’ll update it.

The Testing Sign up Form is ready for your viewing!

Draft scoring sheet

I am uploading something similar to what I used for usbility testing. Notice that I pulled out Core Tasks from the examples we have in our draft surveys.

The scoring success definitions show in the page footers.

Survey and Test questions

Please edit and add your ideas for questions and tasks for the survey and tests. Thanks!

I broke it out into what i thought was survey versus test questions- please feel free to rearrange as neccesary (Julie)

Survey

The survey will be distributed to all providers and liaisons.

Notes from Wimba Meeting 6/16/2010

We were able to make a decision about the technology- we will be using Wimba for our UX testing. No other software was available in our price range.

We discussed the survey and test questions in greater detail (changed on page).

Based on time and number of testers, 10 people total will be our test takers. We will put out a sign-up and on a first come, first serve basis, we'll choose a group of 10 people that is a good representation of our partner libraries- 5 public libraries, 3 academics, 2 special.

Wimba tested!

Hi everyone! Amy and I just finished testing Wimba to see if it would work for our UX testing. Take a look at this 1-2 minute archive to see what you think:

A few things to note:

Notes from Wimba Meeting 6/1/2010

Timeline flexible...budget is zero
Section on website - we can gather tools and resources there
Will probably have to do most testing remotely
We can do task analysis
Julie was thinking about using Five second test.com
Julie isn't sure about self-reporting - how accurate it would be
We talk about a rating scale system for measuring success
Julie talks about Show Me What's Wrong or Show Me What You Did site...
Amy Ford - Wimba archive suggestion using screenshare feature with one of us being the Admin

Getting Started

Thank you, everyone, for your interest in the Usability Testing for the AskUsNow! Staff Support website- the Inner Harbor!

I'd like to do a lot of our work in this group (with the added bonus of seeing what these groups can do as we continue to broaden our site) but let's start out with a telephone/skype/wimba meeting.

Goals and Tools

Our Goal

to assess the usability and user experience of askusnow.info/staff and make recomendations so changes to the site can be made accordingly.

Potential questions to be answered:

  • How does this site feel to you?
  • Is it easy to find the information you need?
  •

The Tools

Here's some of tools i've learned about:
