AACPL's AUN promotion & Nook contest– January 2012

Anne Arundel County Public Library launched an AskUsNow (AUN) promotion for 1 week in January.

Here’s how it worked

Circulation & info staff were asked to mention a Nook contest in which patrons try out AUN by asking a question or just mentioning the contest and saying the staff member’s name who told them about the contest. Both the patron and the staff member would be entered into a contest to win a Nook. Emphasis was on patron and staff interaction.

Taking a look at our social media efforts

The "every organization should have a Facebook page" insanity has died down a little but the assumption of need still exists.

For AskUsNow!, we've had an FB page for years now without any real strategy to how we'd use it and how we'd know when we were successful. We had a couple people taking care of our Myspace (MS) and FB spaces over the years but currently, we... well, I...  focus our social media energies into Twitter, which posts to MySpace, and should also post to Facebook automatically (though we've noticed some issues with that).

On Twitter we post customer questions, comments, stats, and our delicious resources tags once we've created a new one.

But now, especially in the light of our lack of a real marketing budget, i'm looking into specific, do-able things we can do with our social media that makes a big impact and takes next to no time investment for either me, and/or whoever will be doing it.

We're celebrating 300,000 questions this summer!

Just a few months ago we celebrated our seventh year of service to the Maryland community and this summer we'll be celebrating our three hundred thousandth question!

We're gearing up to make sure that all partner libraries recieve a "celebration kit" with swag, posters, sample press releases, etc so that we can all celebrate our achievement together!

In addition to the "celebration kits", on July 15th at the North Point library of Baltimore County Public Library, we will be having a small press event to celebrate. BCPL Director Jim Fish and State Librarian Irene Padilla will be present to give remarks.

Stay tuned for details!
